Matthias J Skoglund, ‘Handling The Undead’

NonStop Entertainment has acquired Nordic distribution rights to Mattias J Skoglund’s upcoming horror The Home [working title].

The film will begin production in Gotland, Sweden in spring, produced by Siri Hjorton Wagner for [sic] film. LevelK is handling international sales.

The Home is based on Mats Strandberg’s 2017 novel of the same name, about a man who returns to his small town to care for his dementia-stricken mother, as she experiences terrifying visions of her late abusive husband.

Strandberg is adapting his book in collaboration with Skoglund; co-producers are Elina Litvinova of Three Brothers and Heather Millard of Compass Films. Financing comes from the Svenska Filminstitutet, co-producers SVT and Gotlands Filmfond, the Estonian Film Institute, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Icelandic Film Centre and the Nordic Film & TV Fond.

Stranberg’s previous novels include 2011’s The Circle; and 2021’s The Conference, the latter of which was adapted to a Netflix feature released last year. Skoglund recently co-created, wrote and directed drama series Dough with Levan Akin and Sara B. Elfgren

“What makes the story ultimately so scary is that it is based on the threat that comes from within; the great fear we all share of losing control over our own reality,” said Skoglund.

“Most of us can relate to the fear of losing a loved one to age and dementia. The Home is a psychological horror that aims to both touch, entertain and scare a wide range of audiences,” said Wagner.

Undead rises

NonStop has also picked up Nordic rights to Thea Hvistendahl’s Handling The Undead.

Based on the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist – author and screenwriter of Let The Right One InHandling The Undead reunites The Worst Person In The World co-stars Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie in the story of three families thrown into chaos when the dead reawaken on a hot summer day in Oslo.

The film debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January, winning a special jury award for Peter Raeburn’s original music in the world cinema dramatic section.

NonStop has acquired a third title – Philipp Fussenegger and Judy Landkammer’s documentary Teaches Of Peaches, ahead of its world premiere in Panorama Documentary on Wednesday, February 21. The film about artist, musician and feminist icon Peaches also features Leslie Feist, Chilly Gonzales, Shirley Manson, Charlie Le Mindu and Black Cracker; Germany’s Magnetfilm handles sales.
