Colleen A. Kingsbury Selected as 2019 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship Recipient

The American Library Association (ALA) has selected Colleen A. Kingsbury of White Lake, Michigan as the 2019 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship recipient.

The $3,000 award is given to an ALA or library support staff member to help finance the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam L. Hornback, a longtime ALA staff member, who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board.

Kingsbury says her childhood was filled with time spent at her local library, and she was always delighted to be there. She has known since the seventh grade that she wanted to work in public libraries. At age fifteen, she began working at a public library as a page and continued in this position throughout her undergraduate years. Kingsbury stated, “There is nothing I believe in more than the power of a library.”

Currently, Kingsbury works in support services at the Novi Public Library (Michigan). She said she “feels so much energy and excitement about continuing her work in the public library system as she begins her MLIS program.”

Kingsbury’s joy of working in libraries is evident to those who have worked with her. One reference stated that “she has a wonderful rapport with staff and patrons.” Another reference stated that she is “a self-starter who is both competent and dedicated. She is a great asset to the library.” Yet another reference stated that she is “one of the most dependable, hardworking, intelligent individuals I have known. She maintains a positive attitude and works well with others. She is always professional and courteous when dealing with library patrons. She has consistently demonstrated a strong dedication to her job. She will be an excellent addition to the library profession.”

Kingsbury will attend Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
