KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. - November 11, 2022 - (Newswire.com)

Richard Boyd, who lives on the outer banks of North Carolina, has completed his new book "From the Ballfields to the Coalfields": an engaging memoir that invites readers to join the author as he relives the highlights of his life, sharing memorable anecdotes and fascinating stories from his various experiences.

Following a career of over 40 years as a teacher and coach, author Richard Boyd decided to write a book that sent him on a journey from the ball fields as a child to the coalfields as an older adult. Coach Boyd stayed on the ball fields as a child and finished his teaching and coaching career living in the small coal-mining community of Dante, Virginia, in far southwest Virginia. Because of his many years as a coach, most people call him simply "Coach."

From 1963 until 2010, Coach Boyd taught and coached most of those years in the state of Virginia. He taught health and physical education, American history, and geography. For most of the years that he taught, Coach Boyd also coached football, basketball, or baseball. Besides coaching, Coach Boyd played amateur organized baseball until the age of 40. He pitched against Hall of Famer Jim "Catfish" Hunter and was on a team that played against another Hall of Famer, the great Willie Mays.

Richard Boyd discusses his work, writing, "From the Ball Fields to the Coalfields is written to be nonfiction, although some stories are hard to believe. The lifetime of experiences mostly occurred in three regions of Virginia and some in Concord, North Carolina. The three regions in Virginia were the coastal tidewater area, the Shenandoah Valley, and the coalfields of far southwest Virginia. The people involved are friends, family, teachers, coaches, pro-athletes, my baseball teammates, and so many wonderful kids that I taught or coached."

He continues, "Before my time on the ball fields, the book covers my grandfather's part in helping with the Great Depression and an early part of my family in Concord, North Carolina. The period covers a period about being a World War II child, gangs of the fifties, school and amateur baseball, glory years of sports by way of radio, how army and college life was over fifty years ago, and how it was to be a teacher and coach for most of the period beginning in the early 1960s until 2010. Racial equality is one of America's top issues. Chapters 20, 22, 23, and 27 demonstrate how far our nation has gone to be equal, but we still have a way to go. The chapters stress my involvement with African American treatment before Dr. Martin L. King's speech about freedom."
