Nicolas Cage may have been Ghost Rider and taken his name from Luke Cage, but he’s behind on superhero movies, saying he doesn’t keep up.
You can’t suffer from superhero fatigue if you don’t watch the movies! Noted superhero fanatic Nicolas Cage said he doesn’t keep up with Marvel or DC movies, even suggesting that they are simply not for his demographic.
Speaking with Yahoo!, Nicolas Cage was asked how he felt about superhero fatigue, a buzz phrase that has swept the fanbase faster than a speeding bullet. “I mean, did I have my tray of lemon cookies and my bottle of NyQuil and lose my mind reading Stan Lee’s Marvel Comics at 12? Of course I did…But I’m not doing that anymore and I’m not really that up [on them].” Cage did backtrack slightly, saying, “I don’t have anything against superhero movies, but it’s not really what I’m consuming.”
Nicolas Cage previously hinted at a form of disinterest in superhero and comic book movies, citing the Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular. While Cage didn’t exactly blast the studio, he’s aware that they might want him more than he needs them, saying, “I don’t need to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage.” Valid point indeed. Still, just as he did in the Yahoo! interview, Nicolas Cage assured people he doesn’t have an active disdain for the genre, lest his comments be misconstrued. “I’ve gotta be nice about Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage,” he said, referring to ditching the Coppola surname early in his career. “What am I going to do, put Marvel movies down? Stan Lee is my surrealistic father. He named me.” And, in turn, Cage named one of his sons Kal-El, showing a sort of mutual respect for both Marvel and DC. Movie-wise, Cage has a brief history with superhero movies, starring in two Ghost Rider flicks and nearly playing Superman himself for Tim Burton, not to mention voicing both Superman and Spider-Man Noir.
Prior to Nicolas Cages’ disregard for superhero flicks, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige added some fame to the name of superhero fatigue while at the same time denying the feeling itself, recalling, “People were asking, ‘Well, how long is this going to last? Is this fad of comic book movies going to end?…I didn’t really understand the question….Do you think the audience will sour on movies being adapted from books?’ You would never ask that because there’s an inherent understanding among most people that a book can be anything. A novel can have any type of story whatsoever. So it all depends on what story you’re translating. Non-comic readers don’t understand that it’s the same thing in comics.”
