Confirmed: The Marvels will be the MCU’s shortest film yet

With a runtime of 105 minutes, this month’s The Marvels will be the studio’s shortest film to be released theatrically.

Amid the debate over whether movies have gotten too long is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the longest entry, Avengers: Endgame, surpassing three hours. Those aren’t Martin Scorsese numbers and don’t “require” an intermission, but that undoubtedly puts it in “epic” territory. One movie that won’t be joining the MCU’s penchant for excessive runtimes is its next, The Marvels, which clocks in at a mere 105 minutes, according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

The fact that we feel the need to even point out just how different The Marvels’ runtime is compared to most of its predecessors really says something about the overinflated lengths within the MCU. Consider this: eight other MCU movies have exceeded the 140-minute mark, with three outside of Endgame hitting two and a half hours or more. But we also have to wonder: Is The Marvels really all that short or does it just seem that way compared to the rest of the entries?

At 105 minutes, The Marvels will in fact be the MCU’s shortest film released theatrically, as the next-shortest, Thor: The Dark World, had a runtime of 112 minutes. While both The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Werewolf by Night would be considered features by Academy and AFI standards, they debuted on Disney+.

The Marvels “focuses on Carol Danvers reclaiming her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taking revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must learn to work together to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.’” The movie comes out on November 10th and is the 33rd movie in the MCU. It is currently tracking upwards of $80 million on opening weekend.

How do you feel about The Marvels having a 105-minute runtime? Is this a good route for the MCU to take or do some of the more epic entries deserve their length? Give us your thoughts below.
