MTV Movie & TV Awards: List of winners from last night’s show plus Tom Cruise’s acceptance speech from a plane

The former music channel aired a pre-taped show in the wake of the writer’s strike, and Tom Cruise thanked the fans in his signature way.

Last night saw the broadcast of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. However, it would not be a usual broadcast with a live taping. Due to the current unrest of the Writer’s Guild strike, many attendees had chosen not to participate in solidarity with the ongoing protest. This prompted the once music-centric channel to air a pre-taped special.

Bruce Gillmer, the President of programming at Paramount Global and EP on the award show, stated, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.”

One of the big wins of the night went to the star of a generation, Tom Cruise, as he took home a trophy for Best Performance for Top Gun: Maverick. In usual Tom Cruise fashion, he accepted the award via a daredevil stunt. The Mission: Impossible star had taped his speech whilst flying his personal aircraft that was also featured in Top Gun: Maverick. “Thank you so much for the award,” Cruise says through his headset. “I make these films for you. I love you. I love entertaining you. To know how much you enjoy it, how much you appreciate it, there’s just no better feeling.” Cruise then ends with, “You have a wonderful summer. Thank you again for letting me entertain you. It’s an absolute privilege. We’ll see you at the movies.”
