Abdul Qayum Safi was born in Kuna, Afghanistan. His village did not offer schooling beyond grade six, but he was selected to attend a boarding school in Kabul for grades seven through twelve, and eventually moved to earn an undergraduate degree from the American University of Beirut. He later earned a doctorate from Columbia University and has been a Virginia resident for the last 15 years.

"One Life: An Afghan Remembers" tells Safi's story about growing up in a small tribal society in Afghanistan, in the region that would be later known as the "Valley of Death". Having grown up facing the confines and difficulty placed upon him by this community, he was able to set forth on his own into the cities. With that came a whole new set of dangers and customs to learn, along with new struggles to push through if he were to come out on the other side.

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, "One Life: An Afghan Remembers" is an inspirational story, one that shows how the human spirit can persevere and lead one toward a better life.
