Maggie Dull selected as winner of the 2020 Esther J. Piercy Award

CHICAGO—The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) has selected Maggie Dull, head of Metadata Strategies at River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester, as the recipient of the 2020 Esther J. Piercy Award. The award will be presented on Saturday, June 27 at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2020 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, IL.

Dull received her Master of Library and Information Science from University of Washington and a certificate in Curation and Management of Digital Assets from University of Maryland, College Park. Her prior positions include Metadata and Digital Curation Librarian and Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at the Robert L. Bogomolny Library, University of Baltimore and Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at Goucher College Library.

Dull’s career shows outstanding accomplishments and the promise of continued success. She is a well-rounded librarian with active roles in service, scholarship, professional engagement and teaching. In her current position she works with departments across her institution on large-scale metadata projects, an innovative approach to metadata management which centers the library in the larger metadata ecosystem of the University. Dull has demonstrated increasing levels of responsibility in professional service in regional and national organizations, including serving on the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section Cataloging Committee and then in an elected position on the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section Executive Committee. Dull continues to give back to the profession in a variety of ways. She is an adjunct instructor at the iSchool at the University of Maryland, College Park as well as an instructor for the ALCTS Fundamentals of Metadata web course. She is also a regular presenter at regional and national conferences and an invited guest lecturer.

Through sustained engagement with the profession, Dull exemplifies the qualities highlighted by the Piercy Award. The Piercy Award was established in memory of Esther J. Piercy, editor of the Journal of Cataloging and Classification from 1950 to 1956 and of Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS) from 1957 to 1967. The award recognizes the contributions by a librarian with no more than 10 years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise for continuing contributions and leadership in the areas of librarianship included in library collections and technical services. The recipient receives a $1,500 grant donated by GOBI Library Solutions from EBSCO and a citation.

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, including acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation and continuing resources in digital and print formats.
