‘Leibniz’

91-year-old German filmmaker Edgar Reitz, best known for the influential Heimat trilogy, has started shooting his latest film Leibniz, a portrait of leading Enlightenment thinker Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

A German polymath and one of the founders of calculus, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was one of the most important thinkers of the late 17^th and early 18^th centuries.

Leibniz recounts five days in his life in the winter of 1704/05, when he is supposed to sit for a portrait painter at Herrenhausen Palace. When the session fails, a young female painter from the Netherlands takes over. She sets herself the task of capturing his whole personality in the picture, with all its achievements and hidden fears, getting Leibniz to open up his soul to her.

Edgar Selge stars as Leibniz, with Lars Eidinger, Barbara Sukowa, Aenne Schwarz, Antonia Bill and Michael Kranz in the other leading roles. Salome Kammer and Matija Chlupacek, among others, appear in supporting roles.

The producers are Ingo Fliess, who produced the Oscar-nominated The Teachers’ Lounge, and Christian Reitz.

Leibniz is a co-production of if… Productions with Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion with BR/arte, funded by BKM, FFF Bayern, FFA, DFFF, Nordmedia, Medienförderung Rheinland-Pfalz, distributed in Germany by Weltkino.

The screenplay is co-written by Gert Heidenreich and Edgar Reitz, with Matthias Grunsky as director of photography and Renate Schmaderer as production designer, Esther Amuser as costume designer and Birger Laube as make-up artist.

The film is being shot between September 20 and October 22.

Edgar Reitz was honoured earlier this year with the Berlinale Camera award, and has received numerous prizes including the German Film Award several times, a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Luchino Visconti Prize at the Italian David di Donatello Film Awards, as well as a BAFTA Television Award.

Reitz’s feature film debut Mahlzeiten premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1967 and received an award as Best First Film. His works include Cardillac (1968/69), Geschichten vom Kübelkind (1969/71), Die Reise nach Wien (1973), Stunde Null (1976/77), Der Schneider von Ulm (1978) and the Heimat trilogy (1984-2004), which was shown in cinemas, at festivals and on television.

Die andere Heimat - Chronik einer Sehnsucht (Home from Home: Chronicle of a Vision) followed on from the trilogy; it was awarded Best Film at the German Film Awards in 2014. His most recent work, Filmstunde_23, was co-directed with Jörg Adolph.

Chucky’s reign of terror has sadly come to an end. It’s been announced that Chucky has been cancelled after three seasons, which aired on both USA Network and Syfy.

“I’m heartbroken over the news that ‘Chucky’ won’t be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” said series creator Don Mancini in a statement. “I’d like to thank UCP/SYFY/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS come back.”

The third (and now final) season of Chucky concluded in May, and at the time, the fate of the series was still undecided. Although there was reportedly talk of an abbreviated fourth and final season or a potential wrap-up movie, the series ultimately got the axe.

Before the third season came to an end, Mancini said that he had already pitched a fourth season to the network. “There’s very little I can say about that. I can’t tell you my idea for Season 4, but I’m really excited about it. I already pitched it to the network,” Mancini said. “So fingers crossed because it’s something I really like to do. I think it’s really fun, new, and again, another left turn in terms of what we’ve been doing so far. We don’t know the status of the show yet. So again, fingers crossed that we will get picked up, right?” D’oh!

As Mancini mentioned in his statement, Chucky always comes back. He revealed earlier this year that he was in the “early stages” of working on the new Chucky movie that was being designed to “work in tandem with the TV show.” Now that the series has been cancelled, that connectivity may change, but you should never bet against Chucky. Even Brad Dourif, who told us that he considers himself retired, has said that he will always return for Chucky.

‘Happy Holidays’

German producer Dorothe Beinemeier of Red Balloon Film has won the €25,000 Hamburg production award for international cinema co-productions at the 10^th anniversary of the Hamburg Production Awards on September 30.

Beinemeier co-produced Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti’s Happy Holidays, about which the jury said: “It approaches all its characters with great empathy and grants us insights into a world where everyone is trapped.” The jury was comprised of 

Happy Holidays won the prize for best screenplay at Venice’s Horizons section last month; Beinemeier’s further co-producer credits include Bruno Dumont’s The Empire and Ameer Fakher Eldin’s Yunan.

Furthermore, the €25,000 Hamburg production award for German Cinema Productions was presented to Neue Bioskop Film’s Dietmar Güntsche, Martin Rohé, and Svenja Vanhoefer, producers of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg graduate Chiara Fleischhacker’s Vena. The film is making its world premiere at Filmfest Hamburg on October 1 and will be released by Weltkino in Germany on November 28.

Vena has also won the First Steps award for best feature-length film and the Michael Ballhaus award for the film’s DoP Lisa Jilg who had also graduated from the Filmakademie in Ludwigsburg.

An honourable mention went to Andrea Schütte and Dirk Decker of Tamtam Film for their production of Kerstin Polte’s episodic drama Highly Explosive (Blindgänger). Highly Explosive, which was co-produced with Switzerland’s Catpics, has had its world premiere in the Filmfest’s Große Freiheit sidebar.

Two awards were also presented to German TV productions screening in the Filmfest’s Televisionen sidebar with cash prizes sponsored by the Film and Television Producers’ Rights Association (VFF).

The €25,000 prize for the best TV film went to Bernd von Fehrn and René Jamm of Warner Bros Germany who had partnered with Berlin-based producers Roxana Richters and Alexander Wadouh of Chromosom Film on Simon Ostermann’s Von Uns Wird Es Keiner Sein, tackling the issue of suicide.

Turbokultur’s Martin Danaisch and David Hadda took home the €10,000 special prize for serial formats for their production of the ZDF comedy drama series Deadlines, directed by Sonja Heiss.

In a surprising twist of fate at the often fickle box office, the exceedingly well-reviewed The Wild Robot is opening way ahead of expectations. Deadline has the film now opening at about $35 million, which is about $10 million more than even the most optimistic industry estimates and $20 million or so ahead of my own predictions. Good for Dreamworks, as this really is one of the best movies they’ve ever made (check out Steve Seigh’s rave review right here). In the meantime, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is moving down to second place, with $15.5 million, which will easily put it past the $250 million domestic mark.

Sadly, Transformers One, despite excellent word-of-mouth, is crashing and burning at the box office, posting a huge 59% decline in week two for a $10 million weekend. With a $39 million domestic total, this one will be lucky to cross the $55 million mark by the end of its run, which is disastrous for the franchise. That’s too bad, as it’s actually a good movie! It seems this is one franchise that has maybe run its course, even if Paramount is still planning that crossover movie with G.I Joe. 

Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is already being dubbed Megaflopulous online after being beaten Friday night by the Indian Telugu-language flick, Devara Part 1 (which stars RRR’s N.T. Rama Rao Jr.), with Deadline having a hard time pegging the final number. They say it may total anywhere between $3.2-5 million, but either way, that’s a disastrous start for Coppola’s passion project. Truth be told, while I didn’t like the movie (at all – and you can see from my review) it makes me sad that the movie is collapsing so completely at the box office, as even if I didn’t like it – I still kinda think people should see it.

PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Familiar Touch, a "coming of (old) age" film that won the Luigi de Laurentiis Lion of the Future prize for best first film at the 81^st Venice International Film Festival Orizzonti Competition, was filmed at Villa Gardens, a Front Porch Retirement Community located in Pasadena, and included residents and staff among its cast and crew.

Written and directed by Sarah Friedland, who won for best director and starring Kathleen Chalfant, who received the award for best actress, Familiar Touch follows an octogenarian woman's transition to life in assisted living as she contends with her conflicting relationship to herself and her caregivers amidst her shifting memory, age identity, and desires.

In her acceptance speech, Friedland said, "None of this exists without the residents and staff of Villa Gardens Continuing Care Retirement Community who invited us into their stories, home and workplace."

In the five weeks leading up to principle photography, Friedland and members of her film crew and cast led workshops on different aspects of filmmaking for Villa Gardens residents, such as scriptwriting, cinematography, acting, editing and art direction. "Each week we would shoot a very short film, and the residents who participated in the workshop would rotate roles, so if you were directing one week you were acting or designing the next. By the end of it, everyone who participated got to try every aspect of filmmaking," said Friedland.

Residents and staff also participated in the film itself, both on camera and behind the scenes. Dick Myers, a retired Navy pilot who had a career in consulting, real estate, and software development and had never acted before, took on a non-speaking role as a resident in a memory care neighborhood, appearing in several scenes. Resident Lisa Tanahashi worked with the Art Department, meeting with other residents to select personal pieces of art to be displayed in various scenes. The process of collecting the art and hearing the stories behind each piece added a special dimension to the movie, Tanahashi shared.

"Something about this experience changed us," said Tanahashi. "We walk a little taller, we feel things a little deeper, we got to know each other, and we got to laugh with and at each other as we were going through this unfamiliar process."

According to the Director's Statement, "By turning a retirement community into a professional film set and intergenerational artist residency, we wanted to challenge the perception of care facilities as depressing places devoid of creativity, and support older adults' self-expression while inviting their, and care workers', collaboration in our anti-ageist character study."

Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Muscles from Brussels. If you grew up in the early nineties, this handsome Belgian was everywhere. With his unique accent, good looks, and a butt he was all but too happy to show off at least once a film, he was the rare action star that was just as popular with the ladies as the dudes. Changing tastes in the mid-nineties meant that his career as a viable lead in theatrical films started to dry up, which wasn’t helped by some off-screen issues he had with drugs (a Hollywood tale as old as time). But, while his contemporary, Steven Seagal, became something of a parody of himself, JCVD got clean and doubled down on his craft, emerging as a surprisingly potent actor in some DTV movies that are way better than anyone gives them credit for. 

While his days as an A-list lead might be behind him, JCVD remains a guy you can’t help but love, and his legacy has been assured by the fact that he never stopped delivering decent movies (even if the budgets are lower) and has a good sense of humour about himself. And, oh yeah, he’s known to be a pretty nice guy to boot (and is the subject of one of our biggest What Happened to this Celebrity episodes of all time). But what are the best JCVD movies? Here are five (in chronological order).

Bloodsport (1988):

The fact is, you can’t do a Jean-Claude Van Damme best movies list without Bloodsport at the top of said list. The ironic thing is that Cannon Pictures, the film’s distributor, thought it was a disaster and it spent months on the shelf, with it coming very close to going straight to video. What saved the movie was the fact that the company badly overextended itself with a few big-budget duds in 1987, so in 1988, they needed product they could push. Bloodsport is probably the most profitable movie they ever made. Its theatrical gross was modest, but on home video, this cult movie became a monster, and it was an important stepping stone for Van Damme, who plays a real-life (and very controversial) martial artist named Frank Dux, who fights in the deadly underground Kumite. Everything about this movie is iconic at this point, from the power ballad-heavy soundtrack to Bolo Yeung as the villain and the many, many hard-as-nails fight sequences.

Kickboxer (1989):

While I don’t think Kickboxer is quite as slick or as well made as Bloodsport, it’s just as iconic in its way. In this one, JCVD avenges the maiming of his brother at the hands (and feet) of a brutal (and iconic) Muay Thai master, Tong Po. Van Damme has a great fight in this one at the end with Tong Po, where the fighters have to dip their hands in oil and broken glass to make the hand-to-hand fight all the more brutal (I loved in Hot Shots: Part Deux where they made fun of this by having the fighters dip their hands in hot fudge and candy). Plus, this is the one where Van Damme dances. 

Double Impact (1991):

Double the Van Dammage! That was the tagline my friends and I used to scream at each other at recess around when this movie was coming out. The fact that JCVD was playing twins in this one was a BIG deal at the time. My gym teacher was so enamoured with Van Damme that the door to his office prominently displayed this movie’s poster for most of the first half of the nineties. It’s an extremely rewatchable action movie, with Van Damme playing the wimpy ladies man, Chad, and the tough-as-nails anti-hero, Alex. Of course, in the end, Chad, who starts off as a wimp, becomes a total badass, while the hard Alex learns to embrace his softer side. They both learn something! The line readings in this one crack me up, such as the way JCVD says, “Hong Kong? Uncle Frankie – we have a business to run!” or, “I’d never wear silk underwear!” I also love that the producers were so desperate to squeeze a sex scene into this movie that they did it as a fantasy sequence. Then again, Jean Claude and his co-star Alonna Shaw looked good, so why not?

Universal Soldier (1992):

This one is slightly controversial. I considered putting Peter Hyams’s Timecop on the list, but our Director of Operations here at JoBlo, John Fallon, is a JCVD superfan and convinced me that Timecop is nowhere near as good as Universal Soldier. Given his bonafides (check out his pic with JCVD at the bottom of the article), I defer to his wisdom. Universal Soldier is pretty iconic, with JCVD and Dolph Lundgren playing reanimated Vietnam War veterans on a rampage. Lundgren steals this one with his necklace of ears and his whole “the war is out there, man” grocery store monologue. That said, JCVD would have his revenge years later when they both appeared in Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning, which might be the greatest DTV B-action movie ever. Van Damme KILLS in that one.

Hard Target (1993):

For me, Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best all-around movie is still Hard Target (in fact, it ended up on our 25 best action movies of all time list). John Woo is probably the greatest action movie director of all time, and it figures that he would deliver JCVD’s most impeccably assembled flick, with him playing a Cajun sailor named Chance Boudreau sporting one of the most glorious mullets since Patrick Swayze cleaned up the Double Deuce in Road House. However, it can’t be denied that the movie gets stolen by the amazing supporting cast, in particular Lance Henriksen, but also Arnold Vosloo, Yancy Butler, and Wilford Brimley, who, just like Christopher Lloyd many years later in Nobody, proves he was born to do action even if no one gave him the chance before he hit senior citizen status.

‘The Ugly’

Acclaimed Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho has set mystery thriller The Ugly as his next feature, which Plus M Entertainment will introduce to buyers at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) in Busan this week.

Yeon is known for directing Peninsula, which received a Cannes 2020 label and proved box office hit across Asia, taking $46.7m at the height of the pandemic; zombie thriller Train To Busan, which played at Cannes in 2016 and went on to take $140m at the global box office; and The King of Pigs, which became the first Korean animation to screen at Cannes when it was selected in 2011.

The Ugly will mark the director’s first theatrical release in five years, having previously co-written and directed internationally successful Netflix series Hellbound and Parasyte: The Grey. Hellbound returns for its highly-anticipated second season on October 25 and the directed recently signed to write a Japanese adaptation of sci-fi The Human Vapor for the streamer.

The Ugly is based on Yeon’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name, which he both wrote and illustrated, and follows Im Dong-hwan, the son of Im Yeong-gyu, a seal engraving artisan who is renowned for his craftsmanship despite having been born blind. Dong-hwan sets out to uncover the truth when his long-lost mother, thought to have been missing for 40 years, is found dead. A first look at the film can be seen above.

The cast is led by Park Jeong-min, who takes on a duel role as the son and younger version of the character’s father, and Kwon Hae-hyo, who plays the father in present day.

Park previously worked with Yeon on Hellbound and 2018 superhero feature Psychokinesis and will next be seen in Kim Sang-man’s Uprising, which is set to open Busan International Film Festival on Wednesday (October 2). He is also known for Smugglers, Deliver Us From Evil, recent Toronto title Harbin and Park Chan-wook’s Cannes 2022 award-winner Decision To Leave.

Kwon, who has collaborated with Hong Sangsoo on 11 films including recent Berlinale Silver Bear winner A Traveler’s Needs, has also worked with Yeon on titles including Parasyte: The Grey and Peninsula.

Shooting took place over the summer and the film is in post-production ahead of an anticipated festival premiere next year.

Yeon Sang-ho

According to Yeon, The Ugly began with the question: “What does it mean to overcome and defeat societal hatred?” He elaborated that the question grew into a story about a woman whose face society has collectively tried to forget. After telling the story in a graphic novel, he became determined to adapt it as a live-action film.

The film is produced by Wow Point, the company behind Netflix series The Bequeathed, Parasyte: The Grey and Hellbound season 2.

Plus M Entertainment will handle international sales and launch the feature at the ACFM, which runs October 5-8 in Busan. The Korean development, production, financing, distribution and international sales firm is owned by Megabox, one of the biggest multiplex chains in Korea.

Its past theatrical slate includes critical and commercial hits The Roundup: Punishment, 12.12: The Day and Hunt. The company has also expanded into producing drama series, such as 2022’s I Have Not Done My Best and Gangnam B-Side, which is slated for release on Disney+ this year.

An adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein has long been a dream project for director Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker with such credits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Blade II. He’s been talking about it for at least 17 years – and now he’s actually making it! After previous attempts to get the project going fell through, Netflix stepped up to let del Toro make the Frankenstein movie he’s been dreaming of. They haven’t announced a release date for the film yet, but while we wait for that news to come along, here’s Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein:

LONG ROAD TO PRODUCTION

Del Toro has named Frankenstein as his favorite novel, and in 2007, he told us that the project he “would kill to make” is a faithful “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein. He said that he had read the script Frank Darabont wrote for the 1994 film Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and it was “pretty much perfect,” but that Darabont’s perfection didn’t make it to the screen in the Kenneth Branagh-directed movie. Given that del Toro was feeling so passionate about the material in ’07, it’s surprising that that was also the year when he turned down Universal’s offer to take over their classic Monster properties for an early iteration of what became the failed attempt to create a Dark Universe with 2017’s The Mummy. Speaking with TimesTalks in 2017, del Toro revealed, “I’ve said no to things that are enormous and I’ve never looked back. The only time I repent I didn’t do something was in 2007 when Universal, in an incredibly gentle and beautiful manner said, ‘Do you want to take over the Monster Universe?’ And they gave me the reins of several properties, and I didn’t do it. That I repent. So this is a confessional moment, I repent. That’s the only thing.” His longtime producing partner J. Miles Dale later confirmed, “At one time, (del Toro) was going to do the Monster Universe with Universal — Frankenstein’s Bride, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Invisible Man, The Wolf Man — and he didn’t. We feel like Shape of Water was kind of a version of a creature. So now, here he is doing his own Monster Universe.“

Del Toro didn’t want to run the Dark Universe, but in 2008 he started putting together script notes and concept art for his Frankenstein adaptation. He told Empire, “What I’m trying to do is take the myth and do something with it, but combining elements of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein without making it just a classical myth of the monster. The best moments in my mind of Frankenstein, of the novel, are yet to be filmed … The only guy that has ever nailed for me the emptiness, not the tragic, not the Miltonian dimension of the monster, but the emptiness is Christopher Lee in the Hammer films, where he really looks like something obscenely alive. Boris Karloff has the tragedy element nailed down but there are so many versions, including that great screenplay by Frank Darabont that was ultimately not really filmed.” There were times when del Toro said the adaptation might need to cover two or three films, due to the complexity of the book and its shifting perspectives.

His first choice to play Frankenstein’s Monster was frequent collaborator Doug Jones, who has delivered creature performances in most of the director’s films. At one point, the project made it deep enough into pre-production that Jones was able to see a bust of the monster design, which was inspired by Bernie Wrightson’s artwork in an illustrated adaptation of Shelley’s novel that Wrightson spent seven years working on. Jones told Collider, “My first thought is that I’m not the big, broad, big-boned lumbering Frankenstein that you have in mind. But it was told to me, Guillermo is a big fan of Bernie Wrightson, and a friend of Bernie Wrightson, and Bernie had illustrated a version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and all of the images of Frankenstein’s Monster in that, that’s what he was going to pattern my look after. Which was more emaciated, little skinnier, little more pathetic looking. And yet, had an unnatural physical prowess, an unnatural athleticness to him. He was sewn together with spare parts of a couple different bodies. Very bony face, long, stringy, drawn hair. I never went through a makeup test myself for it. But I did go to the creature shop, Spectral Motion, who was developing the look for him at the time… I was there for something else, and Mike Elizalde, the owner of the shop, said ‘I gotta show you something’. Then he unveiled a head and shoulders bust of me with this monster makeup built on it. It was like, honestly, my eyes welled up. It was so hauntingly beautiful, and it did pay reverence to Bernie Wrightson’s artwork and gave you a different-looking Frankenstein’s monster than what you’re used to.“

By 2013, del Toro was considering casting Benedict Cumberbatch (who was nearly in the director’s film Crimson Peak, but had to drop out and was replaced by Tom Hiddleston) as the monster. Cumberbatch had already played both the monster and Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Danny Boyle’s stage version of Frankenstein – but his casting in the del Toro version wasn’t to be. In 2014, del Toro admitted that Universal had talked to him about making Frankenstein (plus Bride of Frankenstein) for them “several times,” but he was hesitant because making his dream project was such a daunting task.

Then, in 2023, Netflix offered del Toro the chance to make Frankenstein for them. Having previously worked with the streaming service on his 2022 stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio and the horror anthology Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, he decided to go ahead and team with Netflix to make his Frankenstein dream come true. Del Toro said, “It’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10-20 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it.“

J. Miles Dale said, “Nothing’s easy, and that one’s not going to be easy — it’s a big movie with a ship stuck in the ice and a ton of other things — but we’ve got a little bit of lead time on it, and we’re excited to get going.” Dale also said that del Toro and Frankenstein are a perfect match of filmmaker and subject matter, and suggested the film could be as deeply emotional as the book is. “In the last couple of films, certainly with Nightmare Alley and then with Pinocchio, we’ve dealt with the whole father-son relationship. And Guillermo and I both lost our fathers in the last few years. When you have a strong father figure, it’s a big part of our lives. This version of Frankenstein very much goes down that thematic road. So, I feel like this is the third film in Guillermo’s father trilogy. That’s exciting, and when you read the script, it’s very emotional and, of course, very iconic.” The film is even said to be going by the codename Prodigal Father.

STORY

We know that Mary Shelley’s novel told the story of the young student of science Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but sentient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. As mentioned, del Toro has described his approach to the material as a “Miltonian tragedy,” and he has said that he would like to deal with the complexities of the novel and its shifting viewpoints while blending elements of Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein. He has also said that his movie wouldn’t be a direct adaptation of the novel, but rather “an adventure story that involves the creature.” At another point in the development process, he was quoted as saying, “The only quality you can claim is faithfulness… It’s a very difficult, tricky slope. Because then anytime that you deviate from that, you’re betraying the very goal you submitted. I’m being very faithful to trying to encompass the whole narrative of the novel. I’m being very faithful in that I’m trying to capture the spirit of the novel, when I read it as a kid, and how it impacted me. I recognize that it’s both biography and prophecy about my life. It’s a very personal film. In many ways it’s the most personal film I’ll ever make, because my connection with the creature is very profound and deep and I don’t think there’s any other monster that has affected me as much.” So it sounds like he has considered different options over the years.

The version that made it into production might have the following logline: Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorius, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before–in order to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.

CAST

The cast del Toro has assembled for the film includes Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Mia Goth (Pearl), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), David Bradley (Hot Fuzz), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), with Ralph Ineson (The Witch) showing up for a pivotal cameo. At one point, Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) was in the cast, but he had to drop out and was replaced by Elordi… and it has been said that the role Garfield had passed over to Elordi was the Monster. The cast and character matchings haven’t been confirmed, but it’s believed that Isaac is playing Dr. Frankenstein, with Goth as his love interest, and Waltz most likely playing Dr. Pretorius.

Whatever Goth’s role is, she had to get a digital body scan done for it. Goth has had to get plaster life casts / head molds done multiple times in her career, but a digital body scan was a first for her. In a video breakdown of the life cast scene she did for the movie MaXXXine, Goth said, “I just had to do another (life cast) for Frankenstein, but rather than the mold, it was a scan! It’s changing, isn’t it? And it’s a little bittersweet. I think I prefer (the mold).” Goth told Total Film that the experience of working on the film has “been amazing. It’s everything I wanted it to be and more. I love Guillermo. I love working with him, he’s an incredible director, everyone knows that, but he’s also just like such a wonderful person and, yeah, I’m very excited.” Goth has also revealed that she has taken to shadowing the director on her off days to watch him work.

Jacob Elordi has simply teased that Frankenstein will be “one hell of a movie.”

PRODUCTION

Frankenstein is a massive production. One believed to have a filming schedule of five months, production has turned out to have a schedule of at least seven months; the five month stretch was just the first block of filming, which took place in Ontario, Canada. Filming began on February 12th – but before cameras started rolling, del Toro took cast members Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Charles Dance to eat at a Toronto restaurant, where they posed for a picture with the staff. A good portion of the Canada shoot appeared to involve snowbound locations and, as Dale mentioned, a ship stuck in the ice. An image of the ship can be seen below, and more can be found at THIS LINK.

From Canada, the production moved on to Scotland, where del Toro took the chance to stay in a haunted hotel room. For the shooting of exterior scenes, parts of Edinburgh, Scotland, were made to look like Victorian England. Images of the city’s transformation can be seen HERE. So much for the seashells…1993’s sci-fi actioner and cult favorite Demolition Man will be getting the 4K treatment courtesy of Arrow Video, as revealed in the lineup of their December slate. Arrow isn’t skimping, either – we just hope the future is big enough for the entire set.

This Demolition Man release boasts a brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, which has been approved by director Marco Brambilla. It, too, has Dolby Vision/HDR. Outside of the technical specs, the Demolition Man 4K will offers two new audio commentaries: one with Brambilla and screenwriter Daniel Waters, and another with film historian Mike White (of the Projection Booth podcast). There is also an archival commentary with Brambilla and producer Joel Silver. Also included are new interviews with the likes of production designer David L. Snyder, stunt coordinator Charles Percini, special makeup effects artist Chris Biggs and body effects set coordinator Jeff Farley.

Outside of the new special features, a draw for buyers will be the “seamless branching” of the domestic Taco Bell and international Pizza Hut versions. As fans know, Pizza Hut stood in as Taco Bell in foreign versions of Demolition Man as the winner of the franchise wars because it was more well-known internationally.

But that’s not all! In addition to those extras, Demolition Man fans get plenty of physical goodies as well: a 60-page bound collector’s book with a wealth of essays, a double-sided fold-out poster (with new artwork), six art cards, and a pair of stickers.

In the age of social media, it’s easy to imagine what would happen with the teenage targets if the horror movie took a more realistic approach. No doubt one would stop to snap a pic of the killer and turn them into the poop emoji in real time while another would take a selfie right before the killer pops up for that final scare. There, too, would be tweets along the lines of, “1,000,000 likes and i’ll remove this dude’s mask!” But how would the most iconic of slasher favorites fare with so much social media around? For Freddy Krueger, it’s all about the memes.

Sitting down for a joint interview with ComicBook.com, Heather Langenkamp – who played final girl Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street – said Freddy Krueger would lose a lot of his boiler room steam thanks to social media. “I mean, I almost think it’s impossible to have a scary character with social media because by the time you’ve already put out the scary side, there’s like 100 memes of you being ridiculous and they’ve figured out a way to humiliate you, so I don’t know if Freddy could even exist today…I see those memes the minute you’re trying to scare me, it’s like there’s a meme about something else.”

Robert Englund – who of course played Freddy Krueger across eight different films – confirmed, “Freddy texts. I wonder if I could get my tongue in a smartphone,” referring to the scene where a phone Nancy is holding turns into Freddy’s mouth.

It doesn’t take much to get Freddy Krueger to want to slice and dice, but we can totally see him getting frustrated when a tweet drops of him mid-blink, the caption reading: “My boy Freddy caught nappin’!”

For his part, Englund doesn’t see social media or the internet playing a role in any aspect of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, although it does have its place in modern horror. “I love the idea of technology being used as a tool in a horror narrative, I think I’m a sucker for that. I just think there’s probably better ways to do that than with the mythology of Nightmare on Elm Street.”

For years Samara Weaving has been one of the most fascinating actors in the horror genre. Every time she shows up, there’s an infectious energy that makes her pop off the screen. And she has a knack for picking cool projects. I love it when a movie has a gimmick that it takes through its entire running time. Weaving’s latest venture, Azrael, follows a society post-Rapture, where it’s been deemed a sin to speak. So the film is almost entirely barren of dialogue and really hinges on its performance from lead, Samara Weaving. I loved the film and you can check out my review. The story is a little stereotypical but its the execution that really impresses. The world-building is fantastic and is a great playground for Weaving’s Azrael to exist in.

I was lucky enough to talk to Samara about her role as Azrael, and what it was like to play an entirely mute character:

“It was weird, man. It was a real [weird]. That’s why I did it. You know, I read the script and I was like, “Oh, this is a challenge that’s not going to come around again. I really want to push myself because I’m psycho. Yes, I will go to Estonia in the cold, in the rain, in the snow, and do five weeks of night shoots. Great… But yeah, it was a trip, I think. Having your voice kind of stripped from you and just having to lean on physicality and facial expressions and really listening and looking at other actors and getting real weird with it. It was cool. It was great.”

And as someone who interviews a lot of actors, two things they tend to avoid are Night Shoots and Outdoor Filming. With Azrael taking place almost entirely outdoors and the majority happening at night, this was a nightmare for some actors. Yet Samara took it on like the champ she is, welcoming the challenge.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but that seems to be all [I’m doing] recently. It’s just “Ohh, is it all nice? And it’s all on location. Sign me up. That’s great.” I don’t know.  Yes. It’s like brutal and it’s uncomfortable and peoples emotions are really high because people are tired, but there’s something…there’s like a sense of camaraderie. And you get the things that you’ve really been planning . You’re all there, cause you really love it and you care about it. You can’t be anything other than super humble and super willing. And you know, like you’re gonna be upside down on a tree for three days. Great. Let’s go, you know.”

Without any lines of dialogue, Samara’s prepwork was unlike any other film she’d done as she didn’t have to do any line memorization. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t plenty else to prepare for, as the role was plenty physical. But without dialogue, meant the character’s background wouldn’t be handled in a typical way:

“A lot of the story was in the script, but there was a lot of like back story that I just kind of wanted to have, for my own sake. Because the challenge for me going into it was like: how do we keep audiences invested in this character? We need to find these emotional beats and make them really pivotal. Really poignant. Or else you’re just watching someone fight people for a long time, which is great. Also, if that’s what you’re into. But just to try and make it the audience being curious about what is happening and having the ambiguity of it all be like “of service to the story” and not a bad thing. So that was what I was concerned about. And the prep really for me…it was like doing stunt training and learning those fight sequences, but also just sitting with: OK, what is this characters arc and journey? Like I would any kind of script and just get weird and pretentious with it. But then it was kind of scary.”

Finally, I had to make sure to ask her about her new film Carolina Caroline with Kyle Gallner which just wrapped filming.

“Ohh it’s gonna be magical. It’s gonna be…he’s awesome. I’ve been wanting to work with him for ages and I’m so glad we got to find this and it’s going to be such we both come from. You know horror, but this is the total departure from that, but I.”

And if you’ve been around the site you’ll know we’re big fans of Strange Darling (I may or may not have seen it 5x), so I had to ask Samara about her experience with the film, and she responded, “Isn’t it good?” Hilariously enough, I was supposed to interview Kyle on the day of the premiere, but he had to drop out for undisclosed reasons (turns out, he was filming this film). Thankfully, Samara was able to give a little insight into that with a fun story about Kyle missing the premiere:

“Well, we were working in Kentucky [on Carolina Caroline]  and he couldn’t make his premiere. And so we got the whole crew to go and see it at a local Kentucky theatre. And then we rented out like a little dive bar and we all just, like, had a mini premiere for him there. It was really fun.”

I had an absolute blast talking with Samara and wish you guys could see the actual video as she’s so charismatic and likable. And make sure to check out Azrael when it comes to theaters this Friday. And for you folks who avoid the theater, it will release to Shudder latest this year.

AZRAEL IS PLAYING EXCLUSIVELY IN THEATERS ON SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2024.

Despite the occasional headline about electric vehicle (EV) fires, data consistently shows that EVs are significantly less likely to catch fire than gasoline-powered cars. Several studies from around the world have confirmed that the fire risk for EVs is far lower than for vehicles using internal combustion engines (ICEs). This often surprises consumers, as media coverage tends to exaggerate the dangers of EV fires when they do happen.

A study from AutoInsuranceEZ found that gas-powered cars are about ten times more likely to catch fire than electric vehicles. Their data showed that for every 100,000 sales, there were 1,529 fires in gasoline cars, compared to just 25 in electric vehicles. Hybrid cars, which use both gasoline and batteries, had an even higher rate of 3,475 fires per 100,000 sales​(Kbb.com)​(Electrek).

Supporting these findings, data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) revealed that vehicle fires, largely involving gas-powered cars, accounted for 15% of all fires in the U.S. in 2020. This translated to over 215,000 vehicle fires that year, with only a fraction involving EVs​(Electrek). Similarly, a report from Norway’s Directorate for Social Security and Emergency Preparedness found four to five times more fires in petrol and diesel cars compared to electric cars​(Kbb.com)​(InsideHook).

One of the key reasons for this discrepancy is the fundamental nature of the vehicles themselves. Gasoline is highly flammable, and internal combustion engines rely on controlled explosions to function. If something goes wrong, it can lead to a fire. EVs, on the other hand, do not rely on combustion, and while their batteries can ignite under specific conditions—such as severe crashes or manufacturing defects—these incidents are rare and usually well-contained​(Kbb.com)​(CleanTechnica).

Some skepticism about EV safety persists, partly because EV fires, when they do occur, can be more difficult to extinguish due to the nature of lithium-ion battery fires. These fires can burn hotter and longer than gasoline fires, but such events remain uncommon. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), no EV has ever caught fire during their crash tests, further reinforcing the safety record of electric cars​(CleanTechnica)​(InsideHook).

Public perception is also skewed by the way media covers these incidents. EV fires, although rare, tend to make headlines, while the far more common fires in gasoline vehicles receive little attention. He feels the need – the need to please! Tom Cruise pulled another all-star stunt over the weekend, making a surprise appearance at a screening of Top Gun: Maverick. As if that wasn’t cool enough, the showing itself was backed by a live orchestra performing the movie’s score.

With nearly 3,000 people in attendance, Tom Cruise’s surprise spot was an insanely huge hit within the famed Royal Albert Hall in London. During his introduction, Cruise expressed excitement at the rarity and history that the live music added to Top Gun: Maverick, noting its usage during the silent era.

While live musical accompaniments to modern films (that’s talkies, ya see) have become more popular over the years and it’s not uncommon to find them during special occasions (many theaters, for example, do Harry Potter films around Christmas), Cruise said that this particular screening of the Top Gun sequel would allow him to fulfill a lifelong desire. “I’ve always wanted to experience a film like this with a live full symphony orchestra, synchronized picture, in front of a packed audience in the grandeur of a classic movie palace. The Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, has been steadily building up its cast in recent months, and Deadline has revealed that eight more actors have been added to the line-up! The new cast additions are Garrett Hedlund (Tulsa King), Chris Diamantopoulos (The Boys in the Boat), Lawrence Kao (Walker: Independence), Kyle Bradley Davis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Aina Brei’yon (Dark Matter), Robert Lee Hart (Chicago PD),Katie Stevens (The Bold Type), and John Pyper-Ferguson (Suits).

Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” The official logline for the series says it will show viewers an interlocking universe of crime stories.

The previously announced cast members are Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World), Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (BMF), Logan Browning (Dear White People), Gus Halper (Rustin), Aliyah Camacho (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Marvin Jones III (Halo), Michael Xavier (Wild Cards), Dominic Burgess (Palm Royale), John Hawkes (True Detective), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), and Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6).

Hunnam will be playing the lead character, “Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.” Arjona is taking on the role of Greta, “a sharp-tongued top-level car thief and driver and the widowed mother of Angie. Ever since her husband died in a bank job gone bad, Greta has been battling with herself about how to escape the only life she’s ever known – and the only place she’s ever thrived. The problem is, she’s good at this. She’s looking for a big score, a lump of money she can use like a gun to shoot her and Angie out of this life and into another one.” Jenkins’ character is Ivan, “Leo’s dad’s best friend, and has always been an uncle figure to him. He used to be a robber and criminal, but is now currently suffering from dementia. Leo is trying to care for him but realizes he’s more work than he can handle.” Hardison is playing Gnarly, “an old friend of Leo and Ivan. Gnarly was his nickname as a boxer back in the 1970s and it’s all anyone calls him. He walks with a limp, an old one. Gnarly’s a local legend, and he can go from warm to fierce in a heartbeat. He commands respect, partly because he can inflict massive physical damage, even at his advanced age — and partly because he has the authority and gravitas to stop other men in their tracks.”

Clarke’s character is Mallory, “a slick and daring armed robber, as quick with a gun as she is with her wits. Part of a heist crew with Ricky Lawless, who she’s in a passionate Bonnie-and-Clyde-like affair with. Mallory is a woman on the edge, living on the wrong side of the law and hiding secrets that will bring her and her entire crew into the danger zone.“ Halper will portray Ricky Lawless, “an unstable guy who likes booze, coke, and speed (and not within moderation), Ricky has known Leo since they were teenagers. Like Leo, he’s the son of a criminal — only his dad was the most-feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.” Camacho will play Angie, “Greta’s daughter. Angie is sharp, alert and maybe a little too adult for her age. Having lost her father at a young age, it is only she and her mom making their way through life. She has an idea of the kind of business her mom is in, no matter how much Greta tries to shield her.” Mando’s character is Jeff, “a plainclothes Vice detective who pretty much hates all of humanity, and he’s looking to make a score screwing over anyone and everyone that is in his way. The kind of bad cop who uses his badge to shove others around and get them to do his bidding.” Jones III is Chester, “crime boss Sebastian Hyde’s fearsome chief enforcer. Much like a seven-foot-tall man becoming a basketball player whether he likes it or not, Chester was drafted into the criminal life for his size and fearsomeness. He’s no sadist, relying on his reputation and intelligence to get his way. He speaks softly most of the time, but the threat of sudden and deadly violence is always there.” Xavier is playing Terry, “another criminal, a good friend of Leo, a tough armed robber with a big heart, stepdad to Angie and the love of Greta’s life.” And Burgess is Delron, “a large man with a large appetite and large emotions. Delron is facing a trial in the next few days, and he’s at the mercy of a few powers that be in the criminal organization he works for. “

Hawkes is set to play Sebastian Hyde, “a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.” Healy’s character is Seymour, “a veteran thief and one-time part of Leo’s dad’s crew. Shockingly, Deadline was not able to dig up information on the characters Hedlund, Diamantopoulos, and the other new additions will be playing. All they were able to find out is that these actors will be playing recurring roles.

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the filmmaking duo behind Half Nelson, Sugar, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Mississippi Grind, Captain Marvel, and Freaky Tales, will be directing the first four episodes of Criminal. Brubaker has written the script for the pilot and will serve as showrunner of the series alongside Jordan Harper (Hightown). Graham will play Douglas Frederick “Dutch” Springsteen, Springsteen’s father. The movie will be about “Bruce Springsteen and the long effort to put together his seminal Nebraska album, which started to take shape as he and the E Street Band were laying down tracks for his massive hit album Born in the USA.” It will be an adaptation of Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska by Warren Zanes, which was published last year. Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) will write and direct with production expected to kick off this fall.

In addition to Jeremy Allen White and Stephen Graham, the Bruce Springsteen movie also stars Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan, as well as Odessa Young, who is said to be playing a love interest. Jeremy Strong has also been in talks to play Springsteen’s longtime manager, Jon Landau.

White hasn’t met with Springsteen yet as he has his own process to go through before that happens. “We’ve, like, communicated a little bit through some other, some other people….I hope this still all comes together, we’ve still got a few things, we have some timing stuff to work out, and I’m like trying to have a bit of, I think, my own process with it before meeting the man, too,” White said. “I wanna try and, yeah, have an understanding, so that when I meet him, you know, I’ll have a bit of confidence somewhere in me to stand there.“

‘The Red Envelope’

Thai production powerhouse GDH 559 is to launch sales of The Red Envelope, a local remake of Taiwanese blockbuster Marry My Dead Body, starring Billkin Putthipong Assaratanakul from blockbuster How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and PP Krit Amnuaydechkorn.

A first look at Billkin and PP in the film can be seen above.

The upcoming feature is produced by Banjong Pisanthanakun, director of 2021 horror The Medium, who first saw the original Taiwanese film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival last year. It will be directed by Chayanop Boonprakob.

“After seeing the film, an idea for a Thai remake starring Billkin and PP under the comedic direction of Chayanop Boonprakob immediately came to me,” he told Screen. “I thought it would create a very exciting Thai-flavoured new combination.”

The remake will remain as a supernatural comedy about a straight cop who is forced to marry a gay ghost after he accidentally picks up a red envelope. While the main elements of the original film are retained, the Thai creative team also want to be able to surprise the audience so have changed some of the details.

“The relationship between a straight and a gay man and between a living person and a ghost are fun ideas that will work very well in the Thai context upon adapting the film as a Thai comedy,” said Banjong.

“Billkin and PP were our first and only choice for the main roles. If they had declined, this film wouldn’t have been made,” he added. The film reunites the two actors for the first time since hit BL (boys’ love) TV series I Told Sunset About You and sequel I Promised You The Moon.

The feature will see Billkin and PP make their first foray into film investment through their respective companies Billkin Entertainment and PP Krit Entertainment, both record labels that publish songs, create music videos, organise concerts and manage artists.

Also on GDH’s ACFM lineup are horror comedy 404, which is due to open in November; romantic drama Flat Girls, set for a Q1 2025 release; comedy Beauty And The Beat for Q4 2025; and The Paradise Of Thorns, which recently premiered at Toronto.

How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, also produced by GDH, has proved a runaway success in Asia and beyond since it was first released last spring. The family drama has been acquired by Netflix and submitted as Thailand’s entry to the Oscars.

A married doctor has a one-night stand with an unstable woman who jumps out of his window, then begins to torment him, though it’s unclear if she is still alive or not.

Directed by Joe Bland and Grant Martin from a script that was written by Martin, Ellipse has the following synopsis: A man and his dog are stranded on a volatile, oval-shaped planet and are forced to adapt and escape before time destroys them both. The film stars Josiah Authier, Michelle Medoff, Jack William, and co-director / writer Grant Martin. That is the full cast list, so don’t expect to be introduced to very many characters while watching this movie.

Directed by Serg Skobun, Legend of the Carpathians has the following synopsis: As Carpathian legend has it, Oleksa Dovbush was a heroic outlaw with excellent fighting skills and a gift to predict the future. He was left an orphan as a small boy after a local lord murdered Oleksa’s mother. After spending his childhood in exile in the mountains, he returned as a grown man to avenge his mother’s death. Oleksa gathered followers to begin a crusade against the lord, but destiny made other plans for him.

When the screen went black and “Don’t Stop Believing” cut out, everybody watching The Sopranos wondered: Did my cable just cut out?! But after that, we wondered what happened to Tony Soprano. Was he whacked inside of an ice cream parlor or did he finish his onion rings? Did the man in the Members Only jacket do him in or will he constantly live in state of uncertainty? David Chase has given his final say before but that doesn’t stop the theories, be it from fans or Sopranos cast members. Now, Lorraine Bracco is giving her own hopeful ending for The Sopranos.

Bracco – who played therapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi throughout The Sopranos – said she thinks that Tony survived his tense night out with his family. And despite her final scene of closing the door on her patient of seven years, she imagines Melfi and Tony would have kept in touch. “Honestly, I think they bumped into each other in restaurants and stuff like that. I don’t know. I think part of me wants to believe that she took a moment away from him, and they got back together, back in therapy. I could believe that.”

On her final appearance – which occurred in The Sopranos’ penultimate episode “The Blue Comet” – Bracco said she felt like creator David Chase shortchanged the character. “I was also not very happy the way David ended it. I thought it was bad and wrong. I was annoyed. I told him, ‘How do you invest five years into someone’s life and just walk away?’ I said, ‘That is not cool.’ And you know, that was it.”

We can imagine what might have happened to some of our favorite characters after the events of “Made in America” (Paulie will forever be haunted by cats) but I really don’t think it’s open for interpretation as to what happened to Tony. Even without Chase’s say-so, it’s obvious that Tony was killed in Holsten’s. Why else would the previous episode cut back to “Soprano Home Movies” when Bobby says, “You probably don’t hear it when it happens,” especially when the show so rarely did those sorts of flashbacks?

Transformers One is now playing in theaters, and many critics (including this one) say it’s the best Transformers movie ever made (disagree with that? Take our poll!) Yet, the film has been the subject of a bit of controversy, with some fans resenting that, for the first time in the movies, someone else is voicing Optimus Prime other than the legendary Peter Cullen, with Chris Hemsworth taking over the role. We recently sat down with Transformers One director Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4), who addressed the change head-on. 

“Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime,” Cooley said, adding, “he’s my Optimus Prime. That’s what I grew up with. That’s the iconic voice. And Chris and I talked a lot about that early on. And even before Chris came on, I was, you know, how, how are we going to do this? But the thing that really clicked for me was that this is Orion Pax. So it’s before he becomes Optimus Prime, which means he doesn’t need to have all the knowledge and the power yet to be Optimus.”

Indeed, much of the film revolves around Optimus in his early days, when he’s still just a miner (without the ability to transform) opposite his best pal, turned archenemy, D-16, later to become Megatron. Yet, as the film continues, Chris Hemsworth’s voice starts to take on a more Peter Cullen-like cadence.

“When I heard Chris’s voice, he’s got the weight to it,” said Cooley. “He’s got that power in his voice naturally. And so when we first met, we talked about it a lot, and we’re like, okay, Orion can be a little looser. He can be kind of a little more naive, a little more kind of, you know, shooting from the seat of his pants. And then Chris just brought that super charm that he has into the voice. And, I remember that moment when he’s, you know, we were reading through the script. And he, I think it was the speech that he’s giving to the miners that even in his performance, he was standing up a little straighter chest out and just kind of had, you know, the cadence of the power and just had the rhythm of, of starting to sound like Optimus. I got goosebumps because I thought it worked so well.”

Cooley also weighed in on the movie’s vibe, which shifts dramatically throughout the film. As it starts, Orion Pax and D-16 are like the Tango & Cash of Cybertron, only for their relationship to take a much darker turn. “When I first thought about this film, I just loved the idea of going from friends to enemies, I was thinking of Cain and Abel. And Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Ten Commandments. I love those movies, and they had this epic feel to them but with a very specific relationship to the core, and I was like this could be that. We can do our Cybertronian Ben-Hur.”

Earlier this week, Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights entered negotiations to star as Hal Jordan in the HBO series Lanterns, inspired by DC Comics’ Green Lantern characters. Now Deadline reports that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (Homecoming) have emerged as the top choices to play Jordan’s fellow Green Lantern John Stewart. Snowfall‘s Damson Idris was apparently in the mix at one point as well, but it looks like the conversation has come down to Pierre or James. Deadline’s sources caution that no offers have made to either one of them… yet.

Lanterns has officially been given an eight-episode straight-to-series order by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce.

The series, which is part of the new DC Universe that’s being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”

Gunn and Safran said, “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.“

As we’ve previously noted, a different Green Lantern series had been in development for years. From Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith, that one would have told a story “spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.” Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) was set to play Alan Scott alongside Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) as Guy Gardner, but the project was completely redeveloped.

One of the most controversial movies of the year is certainly Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Not only did Coppola spend decades putting together his futuristic fable, but he also sunk a chunk of his personal fortune into the $100 million-plus epic, only to have it met with jeers from many (but not all) critics following its screenings at Cannes, TIFF and more.

To be sure, this isn’t even close to the first time Coppola’s flirted with disaster as a filmmaker. While The Godfather 1 & 2, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now are rightly regarded as all-timers, Coppola had a massive flop with One from the Heart, a movie that plunged him into bankruptcy, as well as The Cotton Club (which I kinda like), Tucker, Jack, Twixt, and more than a few others. 

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Megalopolis has split critics right down the middle, earning a 50% Tomato-meter score, while the audience score has yet to be tallied. If you look at the audience reviews, they range from utter amazement at what Coppola was able to accomplish (and his guts as a filmmaker) to complete and utter befuddlement at what they saw.

The premiere of the final season of Yellowstone is just a little over a month away, but a new featurette reveals the increased security measures taken to ensure that no spoilers were leaked. This will be the first batch of episodes released without Kevin Costner as John Dutton, so clearly, the production wants to keep the ultimate fate of his character under wraps.

The featurette includes cast and crew discussing how “secretive” this final season has been. “On one hand, it was a big family reunion coming back, and on the other, it was a new set of challenges,” said director Christina Voros. “There was a lot of security around the script and the narrative. It’s a huge testament to the intrepidness of the crew, because you’ve learned how to do something a certain way for seven years and all of a sudden to have a new set of challenges that come from protecting the story for the sake of the audience.“

Jen Landon, who plays Teeter, added, “We get these redacted scripts. Basically everything is blacked out, except for your lines.” Colby actor Denim Richards said this adds to the “uniqueness” of the final season. “The audience will really see real reactions that were really not rehearsed.“

While this final season will conclude the main saga of Yellowstone (or will it?), the franchise is galloping ahead with new shows. The Madison is gearing up to become the next Yellowstone spinoff, and it’s got some serious star power behind it. Michelle Pfeiffer is set to star in and executive produce the new show, which follows a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana. Per Paramount, the series is described as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection.“

Season 2 of the The Sandman went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. PLOT: A struggling dancer finds herself drawn into dark forces by a peculiar couple promising her fame.

REVIEW: I would consider Rosemary’s Baby to be one of the greatest films of all time, horror or otherwise. Mia Farrow’s performance is absolutely sublime and paranoia can be felt in nearly every frame of celluloid. There’s plenty of intrigue with the cult of Satan that is deadset on birthing the Antichrist. It’s such a descent into madness and shows the extremes of gaslighting (to say the least). So it’s easy to be a bit nervous about a prequel coming along for such a beloved film. But then you add Julia Garner in the lead role and they seem to be on the right path. If only they’d kept on that path…

Rather than following a couple desperate for a baby, Apartment 7A follows a single lady, Terry (Garner), as she struggles to be a dancer in New York City. She meets a mysterious older couple and suddenly all of her dreams are coming true. She just has to follow their guidance. You can probably guess where this is going but I appreciated that it focuses on how someone would be susceptible to this situation. She’s had her world taken from her and is just looking for a way out. It’s easy to shout at the screen, imploring her to run but the stakes are properly ramped up subtlety. Though I do wish her back was more against the wall. Instead, her issues come entirely through ego.

Julia Garner is great in everything she does and here is no different. Her eyes say so much that the camera can just linger on her and so much is conveyed. Pretty sure this woman could play a stick and make it interesting. But the Terry character is ego driven and not nearly endearing enough. She also doesn’t cross over into paranoid mode until further into the story than I’d have liked. There’s a lot of setup and it can be a bit meandering. Terry also doesn’t feel nearly as isolated as Rosemary was, even being able to leave the apartment with little to no problem. She’s a single lady in New York City yet they never take advantage of the fear and isolation that can cause.

Ruth Gordon’s performance as Minnie Castevet in the original is so deliciously evil that made the role no cakewalk to replicate. And while there are elements that carry over, Dianne Wiest makes it her own. There’s something off about her from the beginning, and she only gets more and more controlling as the film progresses. Kevin McNally has such a jovial “dadness” to him that it’s all the more terrifying when he makes the switch. The cult itself doesn’t get as much screentime as you’d expect, with the story taking a similar path to the original.

The biggest issue I have with Apartment 7A is that it simply looks cheap. Everything about this feels like a streaming movie which clashes with everything about the original. Polanski’s film is so old school in its approach so it’s baffling as to why director Natalie Erika James took such a modern approach with the material. There are two different designs for Satan and one of them is this bejeweled monstrosity that gets far too much screentime. The other design looks better but we hardly even get a proper look at it.

In the end, Apartment 7A is a mixed bag. While Garner and Weist are absolutely fantastic, there’s little else to latch onto. Sturgess is severely underutilized and anyone who’s seen the original is going to know where this film ends up. While that can work (see: The First Omen) it’s hard to get invested here. This is another one of those films that feels like it would have been better served to just be entirely separate from the film it’s trying to connect itself to. I was desperate for them to try something different, though when they did, it came off as awkward. It’s a Catch-22 and results in a unsatisfying viewing experience.

Wim Hof, Joseph Fiennes

The Iceman, a feature chronicling the true-life story of extreme athlete Wim Hof, has been put on hold following allegations of abuse made against Hof by his ex-partner.

Kevin Macdonald was set to direct and Joseph Fiennes to star in the project, which is produced by Genesius Pictures and sold internationally by Cornerstone.

A spokesperson for Genesius Pictures said: “Genesius Pictures can confirm that due to the severity of the allegations, this production, which was in development only and had not begun filming, is on hold.”

The project was first unveiled at the European Film Market in 2022 by Cornerstone. A spokesperson for Cornerstone did not have a comment but confirmed the project was on hold. 

In an interview with Dutch newspaper, de Volkskrant, Hof’s ex-partner Caroline claimed he physically, sexually and verbally abused her during their 10-year relationship. Their son Noah and one of Hof’s step-sons, Christiaan, also made allegations of verbal and physical abuse.

REVIEW: Think about the worst thing you could never unsee boiling in a pot. This line of dialogue spoken by Niecy Nash-Betts in the first episode of Grotesquerie perfectly sums up Ryan Murphy’s latest FX series. The third new production from Murphy in as many weeks, following Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix and American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez on FX (with a fourth, Doctor Odyssey, premiering this week as well), Grotesquerie takes viewers back to the wholly fictional scary stories the talented showrunner started with on American Horror Story. While Murphy’s flagship horror series tells scary stories with a decidedly supernatural bend, Grotesquerie blends the frightening with the realistic in a combination of police procedural and thriller that echoes The Silence of the Lambs and David Fincher’s Seven for what may be the writer/producer’s best effort in years.

Capitalizing on Niecy Nash-Betts’ acclaimed performance in Dahmer, Ryan Murphy has cast her in the lead role of Lois Tryon, a veteran police detective with a drinking problem. While Lois struggles with a morbidly obese daughter, Merritt (Raven Goodwin), and a comatose husband, Marshall (Courtney B. Vance), she is called in to investigate a crime scene that is beyond shocking. With Grotesquerie airing on FX and Hulu, I expected the visuals to be somewhat toned down. Still, the graphic first murder scene involves children, blood, and intentional staging that immediately brings to mind NBC’s Hannibal and the beauty hidden within the disturbing. Lois is taken aback by what she sees and even more so when a nun, Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), arrives to report on the heinous deaths for a Catholic newspaper. Lois detects something slightly off about the kooky nun, but their partnership immediately develops as the crimes pile up.

Within the first two episodes of Grotesquerie, we witness four different crime scenes, all of which are successively more elaborate than the previous. Lois recedes into her liquor while Sister Megan is appalled and attracted to the crimes. Sister Megan confides in her editor, Father Charlie (Nicholas Alexander Chavez, most recently seen as Lyle Menendez in Murphy’s Monsters), who is fascinated with the macabre and some secret fetishes. Lois tries to contend with what she has seen while also dealing with a sexually voracious healthcare worker, Nurse Redd (Lesley Manville), who may or may not be taking advantage of Lois’ comatose husband. The crimes and Lois’ home life collide often as Grotesquerie, the self-named serial killer, seems to form a bond with the cop hunting them down. The series is structured to make us question whether any protagonists could be serial killers or just wacky players, as we have come to expect from Ryan Murphy productions.

Niecy Nash-Betts once again proves she is an underrated actress with her performance as Lois Tryon. Having worked for decades in comedy roles, including Reno 911! and The Bernie Mac Show, Nash-Betts only recently has been able to showcase her dramatic chops, including a lead role in The Rookie: Feds and Dahmer. This character feels tailor-made for the actress who runs the gamut in emotional range in these first episodes while never feeling miscast in the least. Equally good is Micaela Diamond, best known for her stage work as a singer and actress, who gives Sister Megan just enough quirkiness to keep us wondering if she is altogether sane. It may be too early in Grotesquerie to judge how the series will balance elements of dark humor with the deeply serious subject matter, but so far, it feels like this series is aiming for a unique tone about American Horror Story and American Crime Story. We have yet to see how Travis Kelce factors into the story this season, but any time you can get an acclaimed British actor like Lesley Manville to play a character as surreal and broad as this, you must have some tricks up your sleeve.

I have watched each and every Ryan Murphy series since Popular and Nip/Tuck. Grotesquerie feels distinct from the super-producer’s last dozen or so projects. Co-created with Jon Robin Baitz, Murphy’s collaborator on Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Doctor Odyssey, and Joe Baken, Grotesquerie has the signature Murphy look and subject matter but handles it differently. This story could have been a season of American Horror Story, but the campiness is virtually non-existent in this show so far. Murphy’s recent forays into procedurals and true crime stories have certainly impacted the flow of his new projects. Still, the absence of his repertory players from this cast helps the series feel fresher. Murphy brings back multiple talented directors from prior projects, including Max Winkler. Winkler has helmed entries in American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, The Wathcer, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menedez Story, and directs half of the ten-episode season of Grotesquerie. The other episodes come from Elegance Bratton and Alexis Martin Woodall, who bring to life the scripts written entirely by Murphy, Baitz, and Baken.

Grotesquerie has a cohesiveness that has been missing from recent Murphy products, which are rectified by the co-creators writing the entire series. I went in with pre-conceived notions that this would fit alongside any number of Murphy’s prior projects, but instead, it draws from them all while forging a voice that sets it apart. Grotesquerie is disturbing but not yet scary, and yet I am drawn to it because I want to know who the killer is as much as I want to learn more about Loius Tryon. Niecy Nash-Betts is a formidable presence on screen but also a deeply human performer who can be funny and brash when she needs to be but never ceases to make this character feel real. One of Ryan Murphy’s biggest issues in his fictional series is the ability to make the characters seem real rather than larger-than-life, and he and his colleagues may have finally done it with Grotesquerie. It is early to make a final judgment on this one, but I am invested in this series in a way I have not felt with a Ryan Murphy project since the early days of American Horror Story.

Grotesquerie debuts two episodes weekly on FX beginning September 25th.

Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco

Filming has begun in Scotland on Big Beach’s adaptation of Borges And Me starring Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco, and Alan Cumming.

Marc Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Oren Moverman in which the memoir’s author Jay Parini finds himself stuck in a Morris Minor chauffeuring the brilliant, blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges through Scotland in 1970.

As a young student, Parini harbours dreams of becoming a writer and struggles to make sense of the 70-year-old, irrepressible Borges, until events take a surreal turn, leading the men to a place where they find common ground. The cast includes Peter Mullan and Harriet Sansom Harris.

Borges And Me is a co-production between the UK, Belgium, and The Netherlands, financed by Big Beach. Producers include Alex Polunin from Ossian International in the UK, alongside Michael B. Clark, Turtletaub and Tim Foley of Big Beach.

Co-Producers include Leontine Petit and Erik Glijnis from Lemming Film and Dries Phlypo from A Private View. Stephen Burt serves as executive producer.

Whitehead was recently seen in the FX/BBC adaptation Great Expectations opposite Olivia Colman and his credits include Dunkirk, and The Children Act.

Chilean-Italian actor Gnecco is best known for his roles in Neruda, No, and A Fantastic Woman.

Cumming hists the reality TV smash The Traitors and his roles include CBS series The Good Wife and its spinoff The Good Fight, Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon!, and the documentary My Old School.

Turtletaub has directed Jules and Puzzle. Moverman has written The Messenger, Rampart, and Puzzle, among others.

It was announced last year that Hideo Kojima would team up with A24 for a live-action movie adaptation of Death Stranding. While speaking with Variety, Kojima gave an update on the project and whether or not he will direct it himself.

“I have only ever thought of ‘Death Stranding’ as a game. People tell me it feels like a movie, but I made it as a game – the direction, the settings, the story. So, I don’t intend to look back at it and try to see it from a movie perspective. Those works are my babies, and I love movies, so I want it to be something that movie fans will really enjoy!” Kojima said. “I’ll supervise the plot and help them make it, but I won’t direct it. I can’t right now with three on-going projects! I’ll help by communicating with a director I really trust.“

Kojima added that there are “several Death Stranding adaptation projects currently underway, but there is a different story I’ve written that’s intended for a movie. But I don’t have the time to direct it, so I won’t.“

In a statement last year, Kojima explained that the Death Stranding movie would not be a direct adaptation of the game. “There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a ‘Death Stranding’ universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.“

Death Stranding was originally released in 2019 on PlayStation 4 and found players taking control of Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier who brings resources to isolated colonies and reconnects them via a wireless communications network. The film featured an all-star cast, which included Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, and more, who also lent their likenesses to the characters.

Kojima has also been developing a Death Stranding sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. The game will be released on PlayStation 5 in 2025.

Argentina’s Natalia Smirnoff and Alberto Lecchi and Money Heist’s Alejandro Bazzano are among the directors with projects selected for Iberseries & Platino Industria’s Co-production and Financing Forum, which is takeing place in Madrid from October 1-4.

The fourth edition of Iberseries & Platino Industria, an industry meeting point for the Spanish and Latin American cinema and TV sectors, will host more than 2,000 professionals from 50 countries this year.

The Coproduction and Financing Forum features 10 film and 11 TV series projects.

They include veteran Argentinian filmmaker Alberto Lecchi’s A Distant Place, with an attached cast that includes Ernesto Alterio and Soledad Villamil. The production is a collaboration between Argentina’s Twin Latin Films, Spain’s Filmmakers Monkeys and Chile’s Rizoma Producciones.

The film tells the story of the relationship between a virtuoso pianist and a history teacher as they fight for a second chance at love before a devastating illness pulls the musician away from reality.

Smirnoff is attached to (Im)perfect Mom, inspired by the best-selling memoir Drunk Mom by Jowita Bydlowska. It is being supported by Colombia’s Laberinto Producciones and Ganas Producciones, along with Argentina’s Tarea Fina. 

Alejandro Bazzano, known for directing episodes Money Heist, Scar and Inés of My Soul, is set to direct his first feature, La Imagen De Un Crimen (The Image Of A Crime). Produced by Spain’s Bixagu Entertainment, the black comedy with thriller elements follows a 70-year-old retired air traffic controller whose obsessive nature leads him to believe he’s discovered the scene of a crime.

Another selected project, Wildness, is directed by Claudia Huaiquimilla andJoanna Lombardi. The crime romance will explore the explosive consequences of a fateful encounter between a down-and-out  model living in Paris and a young surfer caught up in the world of drug trafficking. It is a co-production between Peru’s El Árbol Azul and Chile’s Family Story House.

The remaining film titles are The Invisible War, lead-produced by Mexico’s Gefilte Films; Blessed Mary (Spain’s TV On); Justino (Brazil’s Mercado Filmes and Portugal’s SPi Filmes); Mi Otro Verano (Spain’s D’Sierto Films, Link-up Production, 39 Escalones Films and Uruguay’s Mother Superior); My Little Justice League (Uruguay’s Lavoragine Films); and Queen of the Woods (Argentina’s Libre Cine, Spain/Argentina’s Non Stop Studios and US’s Bosco Entertainment).

All of the projects have budgets of up to €2.3 million.
